Reading the cereal box

Reading at the breakfast table.
Parents scan the newspaper headlines.
Siblings build walls of cereal boxes,
fortresses to keep out the first bickering of the day,
the first catapult of reminders.
Hang on to a tiny corner of sleep's privacy.
Don't talk to me yet.
I haven't even spilled my orange juice.
